Tregirls Farm

A note from Charlie Watson Smyth:

My parents moved to Tregirls in 1954, farming at that time 280 acres, until I took on the tenancy in 1980, adding Lellizzick Farm with its 280 acres in 1990, Trelowsa’s 200 acres in 1998, and the 480 acres at Trethillick and Crugmeer Farms in 2000.

Tregirls Farm remains very much a family enterprise, and we’re now in our fourth generation living here and working the land.

With 200 Suffolk and Mule Cross breeding ewes, almost 50 sows and weaners, and 60 head of Ruby Red Devon cattle, there’s always something productive for the incumbent three generations to get on with.

I’m extremely proud to say we’ve been farming under the Countryside Stewardship scheme for over 30 years, and that we’re a really diverse farm; with over 100 acres dedicated to growing barley for St Austell Brewery’s Tribute ale, 200 acres of cauliflower farmed on contract, 100 acres of barley for animal feed, and a further 300 acres of barley grown and harvested commercially.

And long may it continue, hopefully in the hands of my grandchildren who are already learning the ropes.

The Farm Shop

Padstow Farm Shop was opened in May 2006 and is located at Trethillick Farm, which is part of Tregirls Farm. Since its launch Padstow Farm Shop has gone from strength to strength providing an outlet for our own Tregirls Farm free range meat and seasonally grown veg whilst expanding its range of the best Cornish produce available. Not to mention whilst picking up a number awards along the way.

As well as traditionally reared Devon Ruby Red beef, Charolais-Suffolk-Mule cross lamb, Tamworth and Welsh White free range pork, there is a stock of seasonally-available homegrown vegetables, salads and herbs, as well as other seasonal products from local suppliers.

The store is full to the brim with Cornish products, which you may think would limit our offering. However Cornwall is now home to an incredibly diverse range of artisan and small holding producers providing the broadest range of Cornish produced goodies like the large range of delicious Cornish cheeses and extensive selection of the best locally produced gins, sparkling wines, beers and ciders.

The farm shop has grown organically over the years, and the next natural step was always our own delicatessen which opened in 2018. Click here for the full story

Ethos and the Environment

Conventional farming and wildlife sit happily side by side at Tregirls Farm - proving you can produce great food and still make home for nature.

Ruby Red cattle graze the cliff slopes and pastures creating perfect conditions for choughs, recently returned to the Cornish coastline. Late hay cuts allow skylarks and corn buntings to flourish - cereals teem with insects and are peppered with corn parsley, fumitories and marigolds, adding a splash of colour to the landscape.

Ancient Cornish hedgebanks, full of interest and life are a delight to the many visitors which come to this family run farm on holiday, the scent of honeysuckle and the lazy drone of bees creating lifelong memories.

Much of the land we farm is part of the Countryside Stewardship (now part of England Rural Development Programme) - an environmental scheme which aims to protect the environment and the countryside through the promotion of green farming practices - which we have been a proud member of for over 30 years. Also, field margins are left uncultivated, this creates a better habitat for rare species of plant & encourages endangered wildlife such as the corn bunting, barn owl, and hare. For all this, we were voted South West regional winners in The RSPB Nature of Farming Awards 2013.

We have green energy too, our 11 kilowatt wind turbine was erected early in 2012 & supplies the farm shop with all it's electricity.
